Nature is where I feel comforted. The Mountains, the Mesas, the Desert and the Night sky, they become metaphors that speak to my sense of loss but also to my moments of renewal. My interest in experiencing space goes back to my schooldays when as a child I drew on the beach, and the vast sandy endless beach was endless like the universe. My drawings on the sand ended when I stopped. The sandy seashore did not stop existing. Space is something alive, it is within us, and within which everything in nature moves around to create its existence. Space for me is the most exciting, complex, living, inviting entity. As I think and process, I become part of this space and I become nature.
Nature, as I see, feel and understand, extends endlessly and does not stop at a horizon line. It is the gaze that limits the vision but just a slight movement of the head extends it further. When alone with nature and connecting to the earth, sky and air, I am empowered not only with the knowledge that there are things that exists in the natural world that are both visible and invisible but also with a modus operandi a ‘method’ to tap into the invisible workings of nature. I look at each canvas as the universe. I move in this boundless space. When I look up at the sky each day, the sun rises and sets. The stars and planets appear in the same place. There is a constancy - a Great Intelligence has structured everything in place. I am inspired by this thought. of being surrounded by this great umbrella that shelters memories, past and present and encompasses present experiences. There is no separation of Time, Land and Sky. There are no changes in landscape, regardless of country. With these thoughts, I make mental drawings, which are reconfigured on canvas or board. The Holy Book says " it is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the the day. They all float each in an orbit."
And so it is with us and so it is with each painting.
