Ralph Emerson once wrote that “we may climb into the thin and cold realm of pure geometry and lifeless science, or sink into that of sensation. Between these extremes is the equator of life, of thought, or spirit, or poetry—a narrow belt.” It is within this narrow belt that my paintings exist. As I paint, Time interacts, fluctuating and tying the physical spaces to memory, the imagination, ancient rituals and patterned structures. Through painting, I acquire a sense of wholeness, a primal and holistic understanding of what it means to be a part of a universal force. The process reaffirms my belief in the potential of all living things to evolve, adapt and change. What evolves are paintings in which experiences move in fluid coloration through barriers, memories and identities to surface as visions of personal spaces– places of rest, places of unrest – resonating the identity shifts of the everyday migrant life. Experiences that begin prior to our consciousness in the watery wombs of our mothers live within us in our later years in moments of recognition. Recognizing these patterns in nature as well as in my daily existence, and painting in these moments of recognition, connect me to structures of nature – to stories of my forbearers, my beliefs, dreams and unconscious thoughts – all of which interact collectively rather than serially, like ‘all-at-once’ zones – timezones. These are huge moments in my painting for in the very act that produces these meaningful places there is a sense of belonging and solace – a personal place in the midst of a communal space. Neither memories nor dreams, these are wondrous moments in time. © Copyright
